Chicago Energy Benchmarking
The Chicago Energy Benchmarking Ordinance, adopted in 2013, requires commercial, industrial, and residential properties greater than 50,000 SF to report their energy consumption data each year and to have their data verified every third year.
Data reporting is due by June 1 each year and is based on the previous calendar year’s data. For example, a covered building would need to report 2024 consumption data by June 1, 2025.
Sheehan Engineering has been assisting clients throughout the city since the inception of the ordinance and has an expert level understanding of the ordinance requirements. We offer tailored and full-suite services described below.
Annual Reporting
Gather energy data from ComEd and People’s Gas; upload to EnergyStar Portfolio Manager; review property details, and report to the City of Chicago on your behalf.
Verification
Provide third-party data verification services to fulfill the verification requirements. This can be performed in addition to the annual reporting requirement, or as a standalone service if you have already gathered the data yourself.
Full Suite
Do you want the process to be entirely hands off? We can facilitate the entire process A-Z.
Specialty Compliance Services
In special cases, your property may be exempt from the ordinance reporting requirements. We can review your case and provide an engineering opinion directly to the City of Chicago’s benchmarking office to achieve an exemption status on your behalf.
You may also have other special circumstances, like requirements from your lender, requiring energy performance metric reporting. Contact us to discuss your case and hear how we can help you.
